Why now

Chickens aren't livestock anymore. They're family.

Eleven million American households now keep backyard chickens — nearly double just a few years ago. Most started exactly where you are: a patch of grass, a saved post, and the nagging feeling that breakfast shouldn't come from a styrofoam carton.

Henstead exists to make that first step beautiful, safe, and simple. A coop your kids run to every morning, built well enough that you never think about it again.

The collection

Three coops. One perfect for your yard.

Solid fir, predator-aware, flat-packed for an easy build. Pick your flock size and we have done the rest.

How it works

From our warehouse to your first omelet.

STEP 01

Choose your coop

Homestead for 4-6 hens. Big Barn for 10-12. Ranch for 14-16 and walk-in access. Pick your flock size and we handle the rest.

STEP 02

We ship it in days

Flat-packed, fully insured, UPS Ground to your door, typically 5-7 business days from the moment you order.

STEP 03

Build it in an afternoon

Pre-drilled, labeled panels and every screw in the box. Two people, one drill, one free afternoon.

Built to protect your flock

The 2 a.m. problem.

Raccoons are patient, clever, and have hands. Everything here is built with that in mind.

Galvanized welded mesh

Welded at every joint, not twisted like chicken wire. Chicken wire keeps hens in. It does not keep a determined raccoon out.

Locking latches on every door

Sliding bolts and locking hardware throughout, not the spring hooks a raccoon works loose in twenty minutes.

Fully enclosed runs

Mesh on all sides and overhead, so hawks and climbers do not get a free entry point from above.

Nothing gets underneath

Raised hen houses and reinforced bases with ground anchors mean no easy dig-under and no shifting in a storm.

What we will not claim: no coop is predator-proof, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What we build is predator-aware: welded mesh, real latches, no easy gaps. Latch every door at dusk and check your hardware each spring, and you have done the important part.

Built for real weather

Rain, snow, and everything after.

Owners run these through Wisconsin winters and Missouri thunderstorms. Here is what is holding up.

Weatherproof roofs

Pitched and sealed, not thin felt stapled flat. Rain and snowmelt run off instead of pooling and soaking through.

Solid fir, stained and sealed

Real timber. No particle board, nothing that swells apart after one wet spring. Re-coat every year or two and it keeps going.

Reinforced frames

Steel-backed corners and bracing keep the structure square under snow load and wind instead of racking out of shape.

Ventilation that works

Airflow up high without a draft at roost level. Hens handle cold far better than damp, and this is the part most coops get wrong.

The Ranch goes further: a removable waterproof cover drops over the whole frame for winter and comes back off in spring. Sheltered when it needs to be, wide open when it does not.

The honest comparison

How we stack up.

Against the coops you will find on the big marketplaces.

Tom and Susan H Henstead coop
★★★★★ The Homestead

We already had the barn and the windmill, and this coop still gets the compliments from every visitor. Weathered two storms so far without a drop inside. Farm-approved.

★★★★★ The Homestead

Yes, I bought a rooster statue to match it. The coop turned into the best-looking thing in our yard. Two stories means the hens have space and my lawn does not pay for it.

★★★★★ The Homestead

Took this during the first real snowfall. Icicles on the roof, four inches on the ground, inside stayed dry and the hens were out scratching like nothing happened. That is all I needed to see.

Gary P Henstead coop
★★★★★ The Big Barn

Retired in the spring, got chickens in the summer. Every panel fit, it looks sharp from the driveway, and eight hens have room to spare. Neighbors ask about it constantly.

★★★★★ The Big Barn

The nesting lid in this photo is why we bought it. Eggs from outside, no crawling in. Grabbed four this morning before my coffee finished brewing. Ten hens, zero crowding.

★★★★★ The Big Barn

We hung lights around it because honestly it earned them. This is our porch view every evening. Everything latches up tight at night and we stopped worrying after the first week.

Good questions

Everything you are wondering.

How fast will it get here?
Most coops arrive within 5-7 business days of your order, shipped UPS Ground. You will get tracking the moment it leaves. Full details in our Shipping Policy.
How long does assembly really take?
The Homestead is one relaxed afternoon with two people and a drill. The Big Barn and the Ranch are bigger, so plan on half a day to a weekend. Every panel is pre-drilled and labeled, and all hardware is in the box.
Which coop should I actually pick?
Four to six hens and a fence line to run it along? The Homestead. Ten to twelve and you want the longest run? The Big Barn. Fourteen to sixteen and you want to walk in standing up? The Ranch.
What should I put underneath it?
Pea gravel or coarse sand drain fastest and stay mud-free, which is what most owners settle on. Deep litter with wood chips works well too. Bare grass is fine if you plan to move the coop. Whatever you choose, add a dry corner or a shallow box of sand for dust bathing.
Is the wood safe for chickens?
Yes. Solid fir timber with no harsh chemical treatments, plus galvanized mesh and a weatherproof roof. Keep the finish maintained and it will hold up for years.
What is covered under the warranty?
One-year warranty on all parts and workmanship, plus free replacement parts on normal wear. Full details are in our Refund and Return Policy.
